I’m looking forward to tomorrow as I get to have fun demonstrating my art at Hobbycraft Bristol, Cribbs Causeway as their Artist in residence. I’m going to be doing some dylusion ink art, mono printing on my Gelli Arts Gel plate, see some examples of the different types of art I’ll be doing throughout this article.

Wealie Arts Halloween Colouring Book Cover

I’m also going to be doing some abstract doodle art, or zentangles as they are sometimes called and I’ll be launching my very first abstract doodle art colouring book, a snap at just £3.50 Don’t despair if you won’t be able to make it to pick up your copy, keep a watchful eye on this space as I’m hoping to upload it as a downloadable pdf at some point in the not too distant future.

I’ll also be launching a halloween colouring competition for kids up to the age of 13 to submit a coloured version of one of the designs (the witches’ hat) from the colouring book, with a prize of their very own zentangle doodle art design of whatever subject they would like me to create.

Firery Waves - Mono Print

The deadline is 31 October so there’s plenty of time for the kids to get colouring and you can download a copy of the competition form and rules here. I’ll post the entries I receive on a special blog post on 05 November together with the announcement of the winner and will post a pic of the winner’s doodle choice once I’ve completed it.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Today, 02 March 2012 is National Doodle day in aid of Epilepsy Action, did you do a doodle today? As a committed doodler I felt it only right that I provide a doodle for such a worthy cause and of course I enjoy the wonderful pass time. Below is the doodle I created especially for the day and underneath are some of my most recent abstract doodle art creations.

I hope you enjoy looking at the doodles as much as I enjoyed creating them. Why not pick up a pen and do some doodling yourselves, I promise you won’t regret it and if you read up on the meaning of doodles you might even find something out about yourself.

Happy doodling!

I’ve been busy doodling again and my current doodling obsession has been back with curves and swirls. I haven’t stopped at just the doodling though, I’ve been making use of my new Adobe Illustrator CS5 skills to make my original doodles into some funky patterns that make saleable artwork. However, the process from a wandering doodle to a vector pattern is not an easy one.

I always work best with pen and paper and rarely doodle in any other way, but transferring those designs to a computer and retaining their detail and textures always has some drawbacks. I scan all my doodles in as bitmap files using my scanner, but this creates a lot of noise and a large file size. I also often use unusual inks, especially bright vibrant gel inks like metallics, glitter gel inks and Zebra Super-Marble Gel Rollerball pens, which give you three different colour inks in each pen. The ink looks great on paper, but some of the detail gets lost in the scanning process. You can buy a pack of 6 Zebra Super-Marble Gel Rollerball pens from Amazon for only £4.69, which I used to create many of the original doodles shown below.

In Photoshop CS5 I do my best to clean up the noise and bring up the contrast so the design is more visible, but to make a pattern that can be blown up and/or reduced in size without losing quality and retaining smooth edges requires converting the image into vectors. To do this I use Illustrator CS5 where I have to painstakingly draw round each of the individuals curves and swirls of a doodle and then colour the shapes. Then I’m able to play around and make my patterns. It probably sounds like a painstaking and time consuming affair and you’d be right, but it is also a labour of love.

For your viewing pleasure below are my original doodles scanned and tidied up in Photoshop together with the vector patterns that I created in Illustrator.

Happy doodle trails!

Happy Valentine’s Day my friends, love it or loathe it, Valentine’s Day has become an intrinsic part of the British
culture and in my experience people usually fall into one of four camps:

Ben's Heart - Copyright R.Weal 2011

The Total Buy Ins – This group of people get swept up in the hallmark ideals of Valentine’s day and feel the need to out do themselves every year with bigger and better presents. They don’t worry about the inflated price of roses, big and gaudy cards and cuddly toys are a minimum. Scarily I’m also seeing adverts for things like IPads as Valentine’s Day gifts, which to me is just way over the top. I mean surely a “token” of your love should not cost £350 +? Truth be told this group is normally either the fairly young or those in relationships (often fairly new) who haven’t quite left the rose tinted glasses behind them.

The Total Buy Outs - This group are the bah humbugs of Valentine’s special day. They don’t believe in it, won’t support it in any way and generally poke fun out of anyone that celebrates the day in any shape or form. They are often disillusioned with every other holiday such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and of course Christmas, having lost any innocence or childlike wonder some time ago. A fair few of them are likely to be single, survivors of past relationships or in one that isn’t making them happy and fulfilled.

The Wannabes – This group is for those that would normally be in the Total Buy ins, but due to a lack of current love interest find themselves unable to enter into the holiday they love with the same spirit. In fact quite the opposite the holiday can make them more depressed at their seeming failure because they haven’t attained a spiritual oneness with another person. They desperately yearn for a secret admirer and are crest fallen when no card or flowers land on their door come 14 Feb. Sadly this group can also be those that become the Buy outs, there expectations never having been met, they give up on the idea of Valentine’s altogether.

The Share A Tokens -This group neither loves, nor loathes the holiday and they treat it as an opportunity to just remind a loved one (not necessarily your significant other) that they are loved and cared for. No grand gestures required, but no bah humbugs either. A nice personal little card, maybe a back rub or some personal vouchers, e.g. for breakfast in bed. Basically something that shows you care without going over the top. There may be a meal and some flowers involved, but on the whole they don’t go into debt up to their eyeballs to fund it!

I like to think I fit into the latter group of people. Whilst I think it’s nice to have a day that celebrates love and lovers, I don’t agree with the commercialisation of it that leads to such high expectations. I read somewhere (last year) that a young lad committed suicide because he didn’t know what to get the girl he was seeing for Valentine’s Day and was afraid she’d dump him for it and couldn’t face it. Obviously he had bigger problems going on, but it highlights a growing trend in our society that more is more and if it were a word morer would be best.

I think it’s important to remember that it is just a day and that if you love someone, every day is an opportunity to prove to them how much you love and care for them. Cliché it may be, but then it is a fundamental truth that we all know if we take a moment to look beyond the modern voracious need to consume, covet and own that there is more to love than electronic goods, holidays, champagne, flowers, chocolates and cuddly toys. You don’t need the material things or even the hallmark card, you just need to show it in a way that make sense to you and to the person(s) you want to demonstrate it to. Because when someone withdraws the little touches of affection, fails to say they love you in deeds or words, it is these that you miss, that cut a hole in your chest where your heart belongs. Gifts can be easily forgotten, but memories, the very best of them, are for life.

This year Ben got a home made Wealie original card (not so strange as I tend to make all my cards), but also including a Wealie original piece of art (the heart design above at the beginning of the article) and a few heartfelt words, plus plenty of love and hugs. I’m getting a massage and Beef Stew and dumplings. I can think of no better way to spend my Valentine’s Day, though I could do without the cold, I’ve got!

To all of my friends and loved one though I would also like to share a bit of extra love with you today, to let you know that there is space in my heart for you too. I hope that wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, whomever you are with, that you are loved, valued and special.

Below is my Wealie Valentine’s blessing. Why don’t you take a moment to give someone your Valentine’s blessing and give the gift of a memory that lasts a lifetime for them and you.

Wealie x

A VALENTINE BLESSING

Felicitations and blessings of love and affection I’m sending to you dear friend
For my heart is too large for one meagre card and the smile this will bring worth more than riches and rings

So with honest reflection, ban all thoughts of rejection, embracing this love and affection
Now knowing this true, hold dear the knowledge that loved are you!

Dedicated to all my dear friends, whose love buoys me when life threatens to sink.

My latest doodles created using some spiffy new metallic pens on plain white paper. As usual they are very swirly and colourful, with a lot of concentrated detail in a small space! The largest piece is A Matter of Swirls, which is A6, the other two are approximately 50% of A6.

My favourite is Swirly Gig, which reminds me of some kind of primordial starfish like creature, but I’m pretty pleased with all three.

Enjoy.

Sorry for the long absence, but with the less than ideal internet connection in the hotel on the Isle of Man and being really tired when I got back, I’ve just not had the will to turn on the laptop until today. Anyway, I’m back to normal now, so thought I’d better update the blog!

Last week I finally stumped up the cash and indulged myself by buying the Adobe CS5 Master Suite. I spent most of today installing the software and getting rid of old versions of Photoshop and Dreamweaver and a selection of other software that does the same thing as the Master Suite. Then there was the fun of ensuring that all my Photoshop presets were copied over and setting up my preferred workspace view. Well once I’d gotten that out of the way it was about 10 pm and I started at 2 pm!

After all that I felt like I needed to have a little play around, so opened up Adobe Illustrator, which I’ve never used before. It took a little getting used to, but with the help of the lovely Ben who’s a bit of an expert in Illustrator I came up with this:

Irene the Illustration - Copyright R.Weal 2010

I’ve called her Irene the Illustration and she was created without a graphics tablet I might add. It was good fun and she does look similar to the face doodles that I occasionally draw in notebooks and on scraps of paper. I can thoroughly recommend having a play with Illustrator if you haven’t done so already.

Happy electronic doodling!

Wealie x
