Hypnotica - Abstract fine liner doodle art zentangle

I’m looking forward to tomorrow as I get to have fun demonstrating my art at Hobbycraft Bristol, Cribbs Causeway as their Artist in residence. I’m going to be doing some dylusion ink art, mono printing on my Gelli Arts Gel plate, see some examples of the different types of art I’ll be doing throughout this article.

I’m also going to be doing some abstract doodle art, or zentangles as they are sometimes called and I’ll be launching my very first abstract doodle art colouring book, a snap at just £3.50 Don’t despair if you won’t be able to make it to pick up your copy, keep a watchful eye on this space as I’m hoping to upload it as a downloadable pdf at some point in the not too distant future.

I’ll also be launching a halloween colouring competition for kids up to the age of 13 to submit a coloured version of one of the designs (the witches’ hat) from the colouring book, with a prize of their very own zentangle doodle art design of whatever subject they would like me to create.

The deadline is 31 October so there’s plenty of time for the kids to get colouring and you can download a copy of the competition form and rules here. I’ll post the entries I receive on a special blog post on 05 November together with the announcement of the winner and will post a pic of the winner’s doodle choice once I’ve completed it.

It’s National Doodle Day!

Today, 02 March 2012 is National Doodle day in aid of Epilepsy Action, did you do a doodle today? As a committed doodler I felt it only right that I provide a doodle for such a worthy cause and of course I enjoy the wonderful pass time. Below is the doodle I created especially for the day and underneath are some of my most recent abstract doodle art creations.

I hope you enjoy looking at the doodles as much as I enjoyed creating them. Why not pick up a pen and do some doodling yourselves, I promise you won’t regret it and if you read up on the meaning of doodles you might even find something out about yourself.

Swirling Doodles Make Great Patterns

I’ve been busy doodling again and my current doodling obsession has been back with curves and swirls. I haven’t stopped at just the doodling though, I’ve been making use of my new Adobe Illustrator CS5 skills to make my original doodles into some funky patterns that make saleable artwork. However, the process from a wandering doodle to a vector pattern is not an easy one.

I always work best with pen and paper and rarely doodle in any other way, but transferring those designs to a computer and retaining their detail and textures always has some drawbacks. I scan all my doodles in as bitmap files using my scanner, but this creates a lot of noise and a large file size. I also often use unusual inks, especially bright vibrant gel inks like metallics, glitter gel inks and Zebra Super-Marble Gel Rollerball pens, which give you three different colour inks in each pen. The ink looks great on paper, but some of the detail gets lost in the scanning process. You can buy a pack of 6 Zebra Super-Marble Gel Rollerball pens from Amazon for only £4.69, which I used to create many of the original doodles shown below.

In Photoshop CS5 I do my best to clean up the noise and bring up the contrast so the design is more visible, but to make a pattern that can be blown up and/or reduced in size without losing quality and retaining smooth edges requires converting the image into vectors. To do this I use Illustrator CS5 where I have to painstakingly draw round each of the individuals curves and swirls of a doodle and then colour the shapes. Then I’m able to play around and make my patterns. It probably sounds like a painstaking and time consuming affair and you’d be right, but it is also a labour of love.

For your viewing pleasure below are my original doodles scanned and tidied up in Photoshop together with the vector patterns that I created in Illustrator.

Swirls

My latest doodles created using some spiffy new metallic pens on plain white paper. As usual they are very swirly and colourful, with a lot of concentrated detail in a small space! The largest piece is A Matter of Swirls, which is A6, the other two are approximately 50% of A6.

My favourite is Swirly Gig, which reminds me of some kind of primordial starfish like creature, but I’m pretty pleased with all three.

The hidden gems you forgot you created

Being of an artistic persuasion, I always have a pen and notebook on me wherever I go in case I need to do a doodle or write a piece of poetry or prose. I usually buy an Elfin Diaries Notebook each year, though I have never yet used up an entire notebook in a single year – I’ve actually still got blank pages going back to my 2004 notebook – which incidentally was my first one!

I also used to keep a compact camera in my bag for those moments when you see an image you just have to capture, but now I’ve got the iphone I can at least leave that out of my bag. I must admit though that the quality of the iphone pictures and video isn’t as good as my trusty compact -Pentax Optio S6 and I’m currently investigating a new Compact that I can go snorkelling with, not to mention the Pentax K 7 that I’m coveting! So watch the blog for more details of my forthcoming gadgetry purchases!

But, I digress – today I want to talk about some of the hidden gems I’ve found just in my Elfin Diaries Notebooks of 2004 – 2010. I had obviously just forgotten about them and I feel a little bit guilty now that I see they aren’t all that bad.

First up are the doodles, which I often have a lot of in notebooks at work, scraps of paper, backs of receipts, etc. These were all quick snaps taken with the iphone of small doodles in the moment, so the quality’s not great, but I was too lazy to get the SLR out tonight .

Incidentally if you are interested in pagan calendars and diaries then you really should check out the Elfin Diaries Shop, you can buy diaries, notebooks, calendars, t-shirts and home grown incense, it’s quite eclectic, but they run out quick, so don’t leave it too late either! The really nice thing is that they are all designed and managed by one lady, Caroline Heaney who named the diary after her beloved pet dog Elfin! It’s nice to support a small business like Caroline’s that has got a great following worldwide now and yet Caroline is still as personable and friendly as she was when she sold her first diary back in 1990!

Anyway – back to the doodles!

This next doodle is a bit more involved and I can clearly remember creating it during a very long workshop way back in 2004! I remember thinking I wonder if I could fill the whole page during the meeting. I don’t think I quite did it, but when I got home I felt compelled to complete it and this was the result. The actual size is A6, similar size to a holiday postcard.

I promise I’ll take some nice pics of these doodles with my SLR at some point and upload them to my flickr photo stream, but in the meantime I think you get the idea.

And finally here’s a poem that I obviously forgot to finish and add to my poetry folder! Funny really, because it’s quite a nice one, even if I do say so myself, though I have tweaked it quite a bit from it’s original format in the notebook, hence the two birthdays for it!

A Recent Workshop Doodle

A recent day workshop and I produced this piece. It’s about two thirds of an A4 sheet and is calligraphy black pen ink, with the colour coming from metallic, glitter and neon gel pens.
