It’s been a strange evening, feeling ever so slightly not quite here, which is definitely reflected in the short piece I wrote earlier this evening. It’s almost as if a part of my spirit has wandered off without me!

I mustn’t complain though as it has left me feeling quite creative and I’ve been having fun editing the pictures from last weekend’s trip to Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard, which I will hopefully be posting to flickr very soon and of course writing a blog post. In the meantime here’s a picture of a beautiful sunset over the Cancun Lagoon in the Yucatan Peninsular, Mexico. It seemed only right to have a beautiful sky picture to go with my new piece “Sky Dancing”, and what better sky than this lovely Mexican sunset?

I hope you enjoy your little sky dance with me!

SKY DANCING

Tonight I am sky dancing, a weight lifting, a part of me reaching out and touching air, rising up to come back down Released of all disapproval, worries and frowns, caring not for material wealth and worldly renown.

More real than imagined, more imagined than real, once more in the arms of those that went before me, released to truly feel.

Unshackled and relieved, disconnected, but free, I am everything and nothing that I ever was and ever meant to be.

The muses court me and words assault me, dark poetry twists within me, feeding the fire of desire for creation, birth and artistic redemption.

And through it all my spirit’s sky dancing, foot lose and fancy free!

Good evening one and all.

Today was not a pretty day weather wise here in Wiltshire. Every day I travel the length of Wiltshire from top to bottom going from my home in Salisbury to Swindon where I work and it is my sad duty to report that for the majority of today’s daylight hours it was pretty grim and decidedly wet.

However, upon leaving work I was no more than 10 mins out of Swindon when the clouds lifted and the beautiful sunset below was revealed.

Shepherds Delight - Copyright R.Weal 2010

I just had to stop and take a quick picture on the iphone to capture it as the redeeming moment of what was otherwise a pretty nondescript and forgettable day. That’s one of the things I love about life, you can be having the worst day, but it just takes one little thing to lighten the mood, make you smile, laugh or remind you that your life really isn’t all that bad. If we take the time to think about it some of the most important moments happen when we’re not looking for them, when perhaps we were feeling down in spirits and then just like magic the game changes.

I try to keep my eye open for those moments, to be open to their possibilities to lighten my day no matter how small or insignificant they might be. I went on to have a really nice evening with Ben, talking and curling up on the sofa, joking and smiling. I’m not saying I wouldn’t have done that if I hadn’t seen the sunset, but it certainly jerked me out of the over worked, tired and slightly embarrassed mindset I had been in on leaving the office.

I often see a beautiful sunset over Wroughton and it often lightens my mood for a good evening. I hope you enjoy the picture and that something lightened your life today too.

Red sky at night, shepherd’s delight!

I may have mentioned before that I’m more likely to witness dusk than dawn. I feel a strange affinity with that time of the day, maybe it’s because I love the night so much and the dusk is always the herald of night’s arrival. However, I do feel there is a very mystical and visceral quality to the dusk that always draws me to capture it in images and try to convey some of the emotions it engenders in words.

Tonight I want to share with you two Photoshop creations using the same sunset shot in the background. The original sunset shot was heavily manipulated and then overlaid with stylised self portraits. The finished creations were called Lady Dusk and Dusk’s Daughter respectively and each had a short poem written to accompany the picture, to give a full artistic creation.

Of the two I think Lady Dusk is my favourite, it’s altogether darker in both the visual and poetic compositions, with the poetry exploring the mystical element of the dusk, the quickening between night and day. Dusk’s daughter is a much lighter, brighter and optimistic visual style, with a very short verse that is all about rebirth. Both the pictures and their verses are below, be sure to let me know which one’s your favourite!

Tread safely in the light and find me in the newborn night.

The golden hour is the hour just prior to sunset and the hour just after sunrise when if you’re lucky, the landscape is bathed in a beautiful golden light which adds an extra dimension and beauty to the quality of your photography. I don’t very often see the golden hour at dawn, unless I haven’t been to bed yet, but I do try and get out to see it at dusk every now and then.

Whilst out on a walk with my Dad and Ben I was lucky enough to get some spectacular autumnal sunset shots at Shearwater Lake. It’s a lovely man made fresh water lake, popular for fishing, sailing, walking, cycling and of course photography. Shearwater is situated nicely between Longleat and Warminster in a picturesque area of Wiltshire on the cusp of the Deverills at Crockerton. If you’ve never been I highly recommend taking a visit!

The lake is surrounded by many beautiful specimens of deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs/bushes such as Rhododendrons. There’s lots of wildlife on and in the lake, from the fresh water fish – carp, bream, roach, perch, tench and rudd to the many water fowl – Canada geese, ducks and sea gulls. In the woods the sharp eyed will see numerous grey squirrels and if you’re lucky you might even spot a deer or two peeking out from the dense foliage of ferns . All of which makes it an excellent place to visit for photographers whatever the time of year you visit.

Here’s some of my favourite pics from the evening’s golden hour!

As I was walking around I thought about how quickly a single moment passes and how often we miss out on some spectacular moments just by not taking the time to stop and look around you.

After I’d taken this picture it reminded me of the poem below that I wrote so many years ago.

A SINGLE MOMENT
Innocence lost, but not forgotten
Love discovered
Joy recovered
Place your hand upon my chest
Feel the love, which knows no rest
Flowers bloom, the bud has opened
Leave me here forever hoping
A single moment
The quintessential kiss
Eternity in your gaze
Forever on your lips
Life should always feel as this
